Marais, Hill, White ride into battle again at Kamberg

The Three Musketeers of KZN Mountain Biking, Stuart Marais, Andrew Hill and Tyronne White, ride into battle once again on Sunday when they fight for the Fuel & Gas Kamberg Classic title on the beautiful trails of Glengarry in the foothills of the Drakensberg.

The trio have dominated the past few MTB events of the Quattro ROAG Series powered by Momentum by sharing the honours in the last few events of the 2019 series and then they started 2020 in a similar fashion with Marais leading Hill home as White took third spot at the recent Wartburg Classic.

The Kamberg event is always a highlight of the off-road racing season for both runners and cyclists with the 7km and 14km trail runs taking place on Saturday afternoon while the 25km, 40km and 60km mountain bike events will be raced on Sunday.

The sublime Kamberg trails are set up to extend their rivalry of the trio of experienced KZN mountain bikers with each rider having an area of advantage at some point. The cross-country specialist Marais likely to most enjoy the punchy climbs that litter the route; while the longer energy-sapping ascents could give marathon rider Hill a lift; and then if he can hold his rivals on the hills, the technically proficient defending champion, White, will be looking to get an advantage on the long new single track descents as riders approach the finish.

In the race for the women’s mountain bike title it is hard to see Christie Hearder being beaten. She has completely dominated the local racing scene for the past few months and although there is a strong contingent of young up and coming star getting ready to challenge, she should add another victory to her growing CV.

Linda Zondi and Sarah Gray claimed the early lead in the ROAG Trail Running Series with their respective victories at the opening leg in Wartburg last month but they will be expecting some stiff competition.

Double series champion Nomore Mandivengerei and Mdu Zondi both skipped the opening race of the series at Wartburg and should be on hand to make life tough for Linda Zondi, while Apiwe Gaga is sure to push Gray hard in the women’s event on Saturday.

The Kamberg organisers have changed things up slightly for the 2020 edition of their popular event with course designer Gareth Sivright switching the route around. He was confident his decision to reverse sections of the route will have improved an already good course.

“Basically we have pretty much reversed the routes from last year and added in a lot more single track and we believe it makes for much better riding and running,” he said when discussing the route last week.

The 7km and 14km trail runs takes place on Saturday afternoon at 3pm while Sunday’s 65km MTB race starts at 8am on Sunday morning with the 40km setting off at 8.15am and the 25km at 8.30am.

Late entries will be taken before the starts on Saturday and Sunday.
